No one is surprised, I think, but Fred Thompson just officially announced his withdrawal from the race for the Republican nomination.
I believe this will help boost Huckabee's campaign. If it weren't for Thompson, Huckabee probably would have won South Carolina. They were competing for the same conservative voters and people who saw a need for a down-to-earth Southerner as the GOP nominee.
I do not feel compelled to say anything positive about Thompson, particularly after his bitter and libelous attacks on Huckabee in the past several weeks. Good bye and good riddance!

I couldn't agree with you more. Thompson was a spoiler for sure. Hope this restarts Huckabee's momentum.
Love your blog.
Yeah ... I tried to think of something nice to say about Fred Thompson. The best I could come up with was "I liked 'Hunt for Red October'."
He was there to help his buddy McCain and did the hit job to help him out. What's pathetic is how loving the conservative punditry has been.
Let's be magnanimous about Fred.
Huckabee won the REPUBLICAN primary in SC -- There is no disagreement that it was only independents that put McCain over the top in the total vote.
It's too bad this part of the story is overlooked.
Starting with Florida, most primaries will be GOP-only. Too early to give up on Huckabee. Whatever happens, he will control a big block of delegates at the convention.
Do we know if Mike will come to CPAC in WDC?
